Day 22: Rest and Experiment — 30 Days of Nanowrimo Prep

It’s Friday again and you know what that means! It’s time to rest. If you feel up to it, I invite you to experiment today, in whatever way you choose to interpret that. Experiment with a sense of play.

For me, today, that means playing around with a writing prompt that I’ll share with you. I find that doing timed writing to prompts can really get my brain working in different ways.

So go get a beverage of your choice, and writing tools of your choice, and a comfy seat, and set your timer for 5 minutes each to respond to the following prompts:

  1. Writing something that is meant to be read aloud. Use techniques like alliteration, repetition, rhythm, and other tools. Don’t worry about the content, just experiment with the sounds of words and their cadence.
  2. Next, write a memory that’s full of emotion for you. Write it as specifically as you can, with all the sensory details you can remember. What was the temperature? Where was the light coming from?
  3. For the final five minutes, combine the two exercises. Write the memory, but use the techniques and language you played with in the first exercise. How can you include more attention to cadence, rhythm, the sound of the words?

Finally, read the last piece out loud. How does it make you feel?
