What happened this week?

Mostly I worked! It’s the second week of school and there’s so much going on already. I have student meetings (I’m trying this new thing where I make it an assignment for each student to meet me face to face for 15 minutes before the end of the fourth week of class. I have 52 students in that class so that’s thirteen extra hours I’ve set aside in addition to all the usual class prep and administration work. So far, though, it’s going great. I’ve met about a third of them and it’s wonderful getting to put names to faces and hearing a bit about their backgrounds and interests!

I wrote another 5000 words on my WIP!

I got inspired to revise a novel I finished last year, which I got great comments on, and I looked at it this morning and I discovered it wasn’t as bad as I’d thought. That distance can really help refresh your perspective on your own work. I have to find a way to build in some time to work on a revision while I’m generating a draft of the new WIP.

My partner and I watched The Hunt for Red October (it’s probably the fifth or sixth time I’ve seen this movie) and I was reminded of how MASTERFUL it is. The character beats, the plot points, the emotional beats… so well-crafted. I might watch it again and do a breakdown of how well it works, because I super admire it. My only real sadness is that the wonderful Dr. Crusher (Gates McFadden) plays Jack Ryan’s wife and you never even see her face. 🙁

Have a lovely long weekend!
